Valentine's gifts can trigger migraine

The Migraine Association of Ireland has issued a wine and chocolate alert ahead of Valentine's Day.

It says for half a million people in Ireland, Valentine's Day can become a major headache.

The Association has warned that some of the most commonly given gifts on Valentine's Day are frequently cited as migraine triggers.

Chocolate and alcohol are always ranked highly on the trigger list and should be avoided if they can induce migraine attacks, according to Donna Walsh of the Association.

"If you can't resist, have one glass of champagne or white wine, as it is generally dark alcoholic beverages that are the danger."

Even the small of perfumes and fresh flowers, also common Valentine's gifts, can trigger migraine attacks, the Association warns.

"We advise migraineurs to be prepared. Make sure your partner knows what triggers your migraine and make sure to carry your medication with you, just in case," said Donna Walsh.
